Everyone’s Favourite Neighbourgoods Market, Woodstock

Picture pilfered from Neighbourgoods Market site.

Ni Hao people! I am posting this from amongst the hustle and bustle of a very intriguing Beijing where I am currently traveling. I’ve had it written up for a while but just haven’t had the chance. Until now – I’ve stolen a lazy couple of hours at my computer after our incredible morning at The Great Wall, and a trip to the famous birds nest Olympic stadium. Talk about an odd juxtaposition. From the unbelievably old to the very new. Yip, China has it all.

So, until I get myself back to sunny SA with more stories from Mao’s playground, here’s an idea to keep you all busy this coming weekend…

The Neighbourgoods Market in Woodstock. Really, what’s not to love? It gives you all the colour and character of good old Woodstock, plus the enchantment that goes hand in hand with Saturday-slowly browsing around a food market at your leisure.

Organic sugar-free chocolate, macaroons (get there early because they often run out by lunch time) to fresh and smoked trout, smoked anything including salt from the lovely Sam Sifton over at The Smoking Shed, pomegranate smoothies, paella, and the ever alluring imported French cheese stand… these are a few of my favourite things. It’s an entire palette of delightful options just waiting to make your acquaintance. And I haven’t even started on the breads.

Have a wander and get lost in all the fancies that catch your eye, and then head on over to the food courtyard and order whatever reaches out and grabs you from amongst two dozen options. Indian, Thai, Italian, Greek… The world’s your oyster.

A couple of Saturday’s ago there was even a first-rate live band thrown in for good measure. Warm and fuzzy in our tummies indeed. Jeepers and I haven’t even gotten round to my tender-as-fillet sirloin sandwich with red onion marmalade and whole grain mustard on ciabatta – utterly unrivaled. Thanks Kitchen Cowboys stand.

You bet your bottom dollar we’ll be back.
