Jakes in the Village, Steenberg

When it’s freezing cold and rainy and the weather is being unkind and I’m in search of real comfort food, Jakes is where I want to be. It’s just over the mountain from us at home in Noordhoek, in the far corner of Steenberg Village, which is even within the Constantia comfort zone. And if that’s too far for you to venture, Jakes On Summerley in Kenilworth is where it all began.

They have not one but two fire places to keep things cosy, and the food just about reaches out and hugs you. I am talking REALLY good Lamb Shank that must have been simmering away patiently for hours, melt-in-your-mouth Cape Salmon served on a bed of sushi rice and fabulous Moroccan Lamb Flat Bread which is like a pizza, but way less cliché. Chicken Woollamalloo and Moonblush Chicken more than hold their own in the poultry stakes. And then there’s the Duck in orange sauce. Sigh of pleasure. I think I once heard the waiter say that they’ve been serving up Duck for over 20 years (please do correct me if I’m wrong) – however long it’s been, they’ve pretty much perfected it. Move over Frenchies. These babies are double-baked with the fat removed, so it’s all crisp and no grease. I am not exaggerating when I say that I probably ordered it on seven consecutive visits last year. And I probably had their Crème Brûlée on each occasion as well. Not your vibe? Then try their hot chocolate. Enough said.
