Magical Monthly Dinners At The Michelangelo

Some things in life are perfectly paired. Architecture and poetry, family around full and happy tables, fine wine and great food.

In search of their own perfect pair, Michelangelo Hotel’s Piccolo Mondo restaurant hosts gourmet food and wine evenings once a month. Wine from different estates around the country are paired with an exquisite menu, and everyone has a merry old time. In fact, people queue for this luxury. Rob and I were lucky enough to join the chef’s table at their De Grendel hosted event a few weeks ago, and all there is to say is that we were properly wowed.

I am not quite sure what I was expecting before we arrived, but I wasn’t expecting such an excited throng of people; such a warm, happy ambience, such genuine charm and kindness from De Grendel wine maker Charles Hopkins, or such a sincere welcome from our extraordinary hosts, Michelangelo’s GM, Mr Roberto Rosa and his lovely wife. Add to that a beautiful pairing story from the first mouthful to the last (created by head chef Rob Creaser) and I can understand why it’s such a Joburg hot spot.

My top wine of the night? I have a special little corner of my heart dedicated especially to Pinot Noir, and the De Grendel Pinot Noir that we enjoyed on the night was beautiful, all light and lovely. And the cauliflower velouté with guinea fowl croquette and okra was the main hero of the night for me.

Our advice is to gather a group of mates and book a table for your next special occasion, and let me know what you think.
